Adam Levine Talks ‘Lost Stars’ Performance From ‘Voice’ Finale
The season finale of The Voice featured some of the seventh season’s best performances and among the highlights was Adam Levine performing a stripped-down “Lost Stars” duet with Team Adam finalist Matt McAndrew. Levine spoke to Rolling Stone about the track and what it was like singing it alongside his Voice pupil.
Levine initially recorded the track for the 2014 comedy Begin Again, which starred the Maroon 5 singer alongside Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. “Lost Stars” plays a central role in the film’s plot, and both Levine and Knightley contribute renditions of the song to the film’s soundtrack. The song – which was co-written by Danielle Brisebois, Nick Lashley, Nick Southwood and the New Radicals’ Gregg Alexander – was among the 79 tracks on the Academy Awards’ Best Original Song short list.
“I loved working with John Carney on Begin Again, and the music that Gregg and Danielle created is amazing,” Levine told Rolling Stone. “When the opportunity came up to do ‘Lost Stars’ on The Voice with Matt and we just went for it. I was looking to create a really strong moment doing a duet and thought the song really showcased Matt’s falsetto. It was one of my favorite performances all season.”
McAndrew ended up finishing second on The Voice, with Craig Wayne Boyd of Team Blake Shelton winning the show’s seventh season. The Voice returns February 23, 2015 with Levine, Shelton and Pharrell Williams returning as coaches. Christina Aguilera will also rejoin the show in place of Gwen Stefani.
