Spoon Ask ‘Do You’ on New Power-Pop Song
Spoon have offered up “Do You,” the first official single from their forthcoming album, They Want My Soul. And while the single artwork — a wild, red and black lion’s head with piercing third eye sitting in a triangle set inside a circle — carries some demonic vibes, the song itself is a power-pop romp, dotted with “Do dos” and “Ah ahhs” that dance around a skipping acoustic guitar and Britt Daniel‘s pleading vocals.

“Do You” premiered on SiriusXMU Monday, and you can now stream the track or purchase it on iTunes.
At the beginning of June, Spoon tested the waters for They Want My Soul with “Rent I Pay,” a heavier, garage-rock oriented effort, which came complete with a clip that put a spin on the whole lyric video trend.
They Want My Soul is scheduled for release on August 5th. The follow-up to 2010’s Transference marks the group’s first album with new label Loma Vista after a long stint with indie heavy hitter Merge. For the album, the Texas outfit welcomed contributions from new member Alex Fischel, who played with Daniel in his supergroup Divine Fits. For the first time, the band worked with outside producers, including Joe Chiccarelli (Morrissey, Alanis Morissette, the Strokes) and Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Weezer, MGMT).
Following their four-year hiatus, Spoon began teasing They Want My Soul back in March, and recently previewed a handful of cuts, including a cover of Ann-Margret’s “I Just Don’t Understand,” during an interview with NPR Music. Ahead of a secret show in Austin, Daniel described They Want My Soul to Rolling Stone as “warmer and more inclusive” than Transference, and that he began writing it immediately after the Divine Fits wrapped up touring behind their debut, A Thing Called Divine Fits. “It helped me remember that this is what it’s like to write everything all at once,” he said.
Spoon have a string of live dates scheduled through the fall, including a slew of festivals on the horizon such as Forecastle Festival, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Budweiser Made in America and Austin City Limits Music Festival.
