Paul Stanley’s Long-Lost Folgers Commercial Resurfaces
Kiss recently announced plans to collaborate with J-pop group Momoiro Clover Z on a new track called “Yume no Ukiyo ni Saitemina,” but that’s somehow only the second-strangest Kiss news you’ll read today. Back in 2000, guitarist Paul Stanley took off his iconic Starchild makeup and lent his vocals to a Folgers coffee commercial. While the commercial never aired, audio from the ad has circulated in recent years; Stanley belting out “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup” is especially powerful. However, the commercial itself had never been seen… until now.
As Ultimate Classic Rock points out, the long-lost commercial was finally uploaded onto YouTube recently. In the ad, Stanley inexplicably walks around an old timey circus where a trapeze artist is practicing her craft. “This is your wake up call / Time to reach and go for it all / Folgers stirs inside of me and I know what I can be,” Stanley sings, coffee mug in hand. “Limit is the sky / Hey world, watch me fly / The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup.”
The confusing commercial ends with Stanley doing some magician-like gestures and disappearing off the screen. The vanishing act proved to be permanent as the ad was never broadcast. “This commercial never aired because focus groups asked ‘who is the old, creepy guy?’ and the agency pulled it,” the video’s uploader writes in the commercial’s description.
Stanley actually talked about the nixed Folgers ad in an interview. “Life is strange. I got a call asking if I was interested in singing a Folgers commercial. And like many other things, I thought “Why not?” Stanley said (via KISSanity). “I wasn’t at all concerned with who thinks it is okay or not okay, cool, not cool, rock & roll or not. I had a blast doing it and like I said, isn’t that what this is all about?”
