Cheap Thrills: Port Your Cell Number to Google Voice for 20 Bucks
Cell phone users can now port their phone number over to Google Voice for just $20, instead of having to pick a new number.
By switching to the digital service, you can have calls to a single line ring all your phone numbers (home, office, secret lover’s prepaid cell), allowing you to answer from an array of different locations. Voicemail, free text messaging, cheap international calling, call screening, personalized greetings and voicemail transcription services are just a few additional features the service offers.
While saving friends and family the hassle of having to remember yet another number and users the chance of missing important calls (come on, Publishers Clearing House!), beware: Porting one’s number cancels your current cell phone contract, which may result in early termination fees. You’ll also need a wireless service plan to continue using the newly canceled phone — although, with a Google Voice account, it can subsequently function as one of many numbers dialed when BFFs ring.
