Jon Stewart on the GOP’s Latest Great Right Hope
The Daily Show took incredulous note last night of the rise of Newt Gingrich, the latest of the “great right hopes” to get a look from Republican primary voters desperate to find someone, anyone, who isn’t Mitt Romney to do battle with Barack Obama next fall. “Wow!” is Stewart’s considered reaction. And to GOP voters: “Don’t do it. Seriously.” True, Gingrich has his moments of lucidity and good sense and even humor, though for the most part he keeps his teddy-bearish charm well hidden. He fancies himself an heir to Ronald Reagan, but Stewart points out, “He’s not Reagan. He’s like what would happen if Reagan had been abandoned as a child and raised by a family of cactuses.” Cue reel of Gingrich bringing the Crazy in a variety of settings.
