Mitt Romney Flip-Flops on Climate Change
This morning Jon Huntsman hit Mitt Romney as a “perfectly lubricated weathervane,” calling him on his flip-flops on Libya, the debt-ceiling, and other issues. It’s a great line, and one the Romney richly deserves.
Here is the video:
But Hunstman forgot one important issue: climate change.
Just a few months ago, Romney at least had the balls to tip-toe around the truth. Here is Romney, responding to a question about climate change at a town hall meeting in Manchester, New Hampshire on June 3, 2011.
“I don’t speak for the scientific community, of course, but I believe the world’s getting warmer. I can’t prove that, but I believe based on what I read that the world is getting warmer. And number two, I believe that humans contribute to that.
“I don’t know how much our contribution is to that because I know there have been periods of greater heat and warmth in the past but I believe that we contributed to that. And so I think it’s important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases that may well be significant contributors to the climate change and the global warming that you’re seeing.”
But then yesterday, the perfectly lubricated weathervane spun around to become a full-blown climate denier:
“My view is that we don’t know what’s causing climate change on this planet. And the idea of spending trillions and trillions of dollars to try to reduce CO2 emissions is not the right course for us.”
And just to shore up his credentials as this year’s most craven candidate, Romeny praises fracking and coal, while dissing cap and trade (which he once supported).
