Y-3 Fall 2012 Globetrots to the Sounds of the Black Keys, Tibetan Monks
Y-3, Yohji Yamamoto’s continually rewarding partnership with Adidas, remains a highlight of New York Fashion Week not only because of Yamamoto’s elite pedigree (his eponymous clothing line remains a seasonal Paris highlight), but for its pioneering synthesis of utility, athleticism, and technical prowess. The media-averting Japanese designer isn’t one to broadcast where his head is at every season, but he knows how to heighten an atmosphere to suit his inventive designs, leaving it to us to decipher from there.
Aside from hosting shows in mood-setting locations, Y-3’s showmanship champions music’s elevating qualities. Everything from techno to Japanese emo to skull-mashing metal is fair game to be played on his runway. For Fall 2012, Yamamoto brought a soundtrack defined by extreme contrasts, prominently featuring the back catalog of the Black Keys, not a band typically linked to Fashion Week. The rock-solid American staple brought a familiarity and an earthy balance to the internationally-minded collection: modern vagabonds, Yamamoto’s idealized young men and women, darted across the planet in chic, boxy garments, kaffiyehs and leopard print. The yearning of Akron, Ohio’s heaviest bar blues alongside throat singing by the Gyuto Monks ensured that Yamamoto’s wanderlust was universally recognized.
