‘Powerpuff Girls’ Ready to Spring Back Into Action
The Powerpuff Girls will return to Cartoon Network in 2016 with brand new episodes featuring Bubbles, Buttercup and Blossom once again kicking butts, Variety reports.
The hit cartoon, which initially debuted in 1998, followed the adventures of the three kindergarten superheroes who battled crime with “sugar, spice and everything nice,” and continually foiled their arch-nemesis, a demented monkey named Mojo Jojo. The show wrapped up in 2005 after 78 episodes and a feature film, The Powerpuff Girls Movie, which hit theaters in 2002.
“The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” the network’s chief content officer, Rob Sorcher, said. “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”
The full series reboot comes on the heels of a 10th anniversary special, The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed, which aired on Cartoon Network in January. The special featured a guest appearance from Ringo Starr, who voiced a “flamboyant mathematician” named Fibonacci Sequins who is kidnapped by Mojo Jojo. Starr also contributed an original song to Dance Pantsed, the shimmering pop number, “I Wish I Was a Powerpuff Girl,” which came complete with a vibrant, rainbow-packed music video that bubbles with the experimental, psychedelic spirit of the 60s.
