Nicki Minaj, Courtney Love and More Flock to New York Fashion Week
Today marks New York Fashion Week’s fifth day, meaning that we’ve officially crossed the halfway point. By now, trends for Spring 2012 have begun to sharpen into focus (until London and Milan throw everything into question, and then Paris rejiggers the season’s mood yet again). As in past seasons, musicians have helped set the momentum for those trends.
As it stands: zero Lady Gaga NYFW sightings yet, but there are still three days to go. Her partner-in-crime stylist/creative director Nicola Formichetti has been everywhere, however, including the grand opening soiree for Nicola’s, his sci-fi themed Tribeca boutique. Nicki Minaj has popped up in unlikely places — today she appeared at a prim Carolina Herrera show, looking anything but the part. Odd Future obliterated the crowd at Alexander Wang. Kid Cudi, spotted about town, just celebrated the launch of his new line for Surface to Air, and last week christened the opening of the French street label’s new Soho store alongside Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon — who also has an STA line coming out. The unifying queen of all things fashion and music, Gwen Stefani was a no-show at L.A.M.B. – but spoke to us about her collection, anyway.
Meanwhile, pop’s new wave is making its presence felt: Lykke Li DJed the Fendi party (alongside rockers Fall On Your Side), and will be performing a special set Thursday at DKNY’s American Express Cardmembers only show, while Ellie Goulding and Sky Ferreira have been spotted at various shows and parties across town. Of course, it wouldn’t be Fashion Week without cameos from a few of rock’s most famous females: Courtney Love and Patti Smith have been making the rounds of their favorite designers, and tomorrow night, the iconic Blondie will make a very intimate guest appearance at Marc Jacobs’ Bleecker Street store.
Tonight seems to be Brit-themed: U.K. pop darling Katy B will play a special show at Fashion Next, while Leicestershire rock dramatists Kasabian will stage a very rare Stateside performance at Mulberry’s 40th Anniversary party. Expect to hear from both acts tomorrow on Thread Count.
