Video: Dior Takes On a Depeche Mode Classic for New Ad
Few bands come as preternaturally equipped for fashionable appropriation as Depeche Mode. With a heroic yet conflicted sex symbol for a frontman, pioneering synth anthems fit for self-proclaimed “black celebrations” and a lyrical fantasia of vices hard to refuse, they embody everything fashion covets as its own. Clearly, the legendary House of Dior can’t deny the noir charms of the British group, going so far as to license one of their biggest hits, 1990’s “Enjoy the Silence,” for a new ad called “Secret Garden – Versailles.”
Models of the moment Daria Strokous, Melissa Stasiuk and Xiao Wen Ju star in the lush clip, which mainly sees them making elegant use of their supernal setting: there are plenty of moody shots of the models stalking the halls of Versailles in everything from elegant gowns to lingerie, as well as vignettes of them roaming the iconic grounds, from those famous steps to the labyrinthine gardens. Though far removed from its intended context here, Dave Gahan’s famous plea for serenity fits the scene: “Words are very unnecessary,” indeed, in the midst of such splendor.
