Not Green, But Blue
Bush has done something really quite remarkable: protecting a Spain-sized expanse of the Pacific Ocean from commercial and resource development.
The scope of Bush’s marine protections is historic, and — no joke — may mean the same fucking Dubya who oversaw the fouling of Western lands and the imperiling of our global climate will also be remembered as the TR of the oceans:
Take it from Joshua S. Reichert, Managing Director of the Pew Environment Group:
“This historic action by President Bush protects some of the world’s most unique and biologically significant ocean habitat. Together with the Hawaii marine monument established two years ago, this marks the end of an era in which humans have increasingly understood the need to conserve vanishing wild places on land but failed to comprehend the similar plight of our oceans. It comes none too soon.”
