Grimes Asks ‘Asshole’ to Stop Inserting Drug Quote on Wiki Page
The best thing about Wikipedia is also the worst thing about Wikipedia: Anybody can edit the content. Grimes has been keeping track of her Wiki profile, and she’s upset that some anonymous “asshole” has been continuously re-adding a deleted quote from a 2012 CMJ interview in which she admits to using hard drugs while working on her album Visions. “I blacked out the windows and did tons of amphetamines and stayed up for three weeks and didn’t eat anything,” she told the publication at the time – but as Stereogum notes, the electronic artist has spoken out about the Wiki abuse in a frustrated Tumblr post, saying she doesn’t want drugs “to be part of my narrative.”
“Losing people to drugs and alcohol is the worst because they destroy any good memories you have of them before, forcing you to deal with the empty space they leave behind,” wrote Grimes mastermind Claire Boucher. “Also, whoever keeps putting the few quotes I said early in my career about drugs back into my Wikipedia page is an asshole. I don’t want that to be part of my narrative, and if it has to be, I want people to know that I hate hard drugs. All they’ve ever done is kill my friends and cause me to be unproductive.”
Boucher adds that re-adding the reference to amphetamines on a hugely popular website is “incredibly irresponsible” and worries that impressionable readers might “think it’s a cool thing to emulate.”
“I hope you know you are doing the world a disservice,” she continues. ” I just watched another person I care deeply about basically turn into Gollum and my heart is broken. “
As of this writing, the Wiki entry does not include the CMJ quote (though it does link out to the full interview), and a portion of the Tumblr post has been inserted.
Boucher is currently at work on a new Grimes LP. In late June, she released the New-Wave-leaning “Go,” her first new studio track in two years. “It’s our summer jam so we figured we should put it out ‘cuz I am very bored of waiting to finish my album b4 releasing new music haha,” Boucher wrote in a statement.
