Hear Deftones’ Lurking New Song ‘Hearts/Wires’
Ahead of the arrival of Deftones‘ new LP Gore on Friday, the band have shared another new album track, “Hearts/Wires.” “I feel like that’s when the record jumps up a notch,” frontman Chico Moreno said of the lurking, atmospheric track to BBC Radio 1’s Rock Show, which debuted “Hearts/Wires” Sunday. Listen to the track below, starting at the 2:30 mark:
Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter recently told Rolling Stone that he was initially taken aback by “Hearts/Wires” because it evoked images of murder, rape, insanity and the serial killer from The Silence of the Lambs. “That song made me think of Wild Bill the whole time – psycho killer and shit. I just didn’t feel it,” Carpenter said. “I had to embrace my inner psycho rapist and come up with the part and get into it.”
Moreno also revealed that Gore was recorded in the same sequence as the tracks appear on the album, starting with its opening track and first single “Prayers/Triangles.” “This is how I want people to hear us after we’ve been vacant for a few years,” Moreno said.
Gore is out April 8th, with the band embarking on a North American tour starting in May.
“The songs are amazing, and we wrote them in a really cool way,” Moreno told Rolling Stone of Gore. “We had all of us in a room together with one person expressing an idea and another person jumping on it. The songs are really built as a collective. We have five guys who have almost completely different takes on music, so when it works, it works great.”
