Hear Brody Dalle’s Haunting New Kiss-Off ‘Parties for Prostitutes’
Brody Dalle has been a reliably badass musician since the late ’90s, first as the frontwoman for influential West Coast punk outfit the Distillers, then as a member of alt-group Spinnerette with Alain Johannes, Tony Bevilacqua and Jack Irons. But her solo record, Diploid Love, has been a long time coming.
Spring preview: 27 albums you must hear
“It happened at the right time,” Dalle tells Rolling Stone from Australia, where she’s just started a tour with Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age (her husband is QOTSA’s Josh Homme). “It was meant to be and the only progression for me. There was nowhere else to go.”
On “Parties for Prostitutes,” the second single off Diploid (which Rolling Stone is debuting here), Dalle’s rasping vocals simmer over a building beat and droning organs until the chorus crashes in and the drums ratchet up alongside driving guitars. She wrote the track, she says, on the Fun Machine organ in the back of a two-acre property in Encino, California, where she lived. Johannes then went in, Dalle explains, and “wrote a bunch of really creepy parts that sound like a bummed out business man in a brown suit in downtown L.A. in the middle of summer. They’re incredible.
“It’s a song about betrayal,” she adds. “It’s a fuck you.” As for that title, Dalle explains that it comes from the marquee of a church in the San Fernando Valley. “Whoever it is there writes really interesting things. I want to go and inquire about the church genius, but I’m afraid it’ll ruin the mystery. So I just drive past all the time to see what the latest is.”
Diploid Love hits shelves April 29th and you can find more tour dates right here.
