Weezer Recruit Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino for ‘Go Away’
Over the past month, Weezer’s YouTube page has been pumping out some weird viral videos leading up to the release of the band’s October 7th LP, Everything Will Be Alright in the End. Some clips have been more forthcoming than others, but in yesterday’s video, dubbed “ewbaite 18 ‘Go Away’,” we learn that Best Coast‘s Bethany Cosentino will appear on the album track “Go Away.”
On recent albums, when Cuomo has collaborated with the likes of Ryan Adams, Semisonic’s Dan Wilson and No Doubt’s Tony Kanal, the result has just been a shared writing credit. However, judging by the clip, Cosentino’s contributions may have been much more than co-writing or singing backup on the track; she appears to share lead vocals on “Go Away,” which sounds like Weezer tackling the girl group sound of acts like the Shangri-Las and the Shirelles.
“Thanks for your kind words and support on my involvement with ‘Go Away’ – Weezer is/was so important to me and my youth, so this is huge for me,” Cosentino tweeted after the snippet above debuted, adding on Instagram, “Well, I co-wrote and am featured on a song on the new Weezer album so basically, all my teenage dreams have officially come true.” Best Coast was one of Weezer’s opening acts when Cuomo and the gang embarked on their Memories tour in 2010, and Cosentino joined Cuomo for a duet of “Island in the Sun” during some of those gigs.
If the “Go Away” clip doesn’t satiate your thirst for new Weezer tracks, some fans over at Absolute Punk have compiled soundcheck footage of still-unreleased Everything Will Be Alright in the End tracks “Ain’t Got Nobody” and “I’ve Had it Up to Here.”
