Watch Bernie Sanders’ Introduction for Run the Jewels at Coachella
Run the Jewels were welcomed to the Coachella stage Saturday with a video message courtesy of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. “I thought the least I could do for both of you is help you out by bringing a few young people together,” Sanders joked of the fans that gathered for Run the Jewels set.
“One of the highlights of running for president over the course of this last year has been getting to know Killer Mike,” Sanders said in the prerecorded video. “His depth of passion, his knowledge and commitment to community is an inspiration to me and I value his friendship immensely. El-P, keep up the great work and let’s get to know each other better in the months that come.”
Following the Sanders intro, Run the Jewels kicked off their second straight year at Coachella with a new track titled “Scenes” that might feature on their in-the-works Run the Jewels 3.
Sanders wasn’t the only special guest at Run the Jewels’ Coachella set: Nas appeared midway through to perform his God’s Son standout “Made You Look” and proclaim that Run the Jewels was “my favorite group.” Gary Clark Jr., who has performed with Killer Mike and El-P in the past, rejoined the duo on “Angel Duster” while Gangsta Boo dropped by for her Run the Jewels 2 cut “Love Again (Akinyele Back).” Despot (“Banana Clipper”) and Boots (“Early”) also showed up onstage.
The Coachella gig also featured the debut performance of “Nobody Speak,” Run the Jewels’ recent collaboration with DJ Shadow, who also joined the duo onstage:
