Stream New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Volume Zero’
The soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy set a record this year by becoming the first to top the charts without any new songs on it, and the album – Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 – has since been certified gold. Now director James Gunn, who selected the record’s songs and even wrote them into the script, has shared a playlist for a new mixtape, Awesome Mix Volume Zero, which features music by more contemporary artists, like Andrew W.K., the Old 97’s and Lyrics Born, than the Seventies-centric artists of its predecessor. A fan plugged the music into an 8Tracks mixtape, which Gunn shared on Facebook, and it’s now streaming below.
Gunn introduced the new mix on Facebook after explaining that he played the music on Vol. 1 on the set, so the actors could get into the mood. “On lighter days, our master soundman, Simon Hayes, would also play music on set between takes to keep people’s energy up,” Gunn wrote. “He did this while shooting the credit sequence in the Temple of Morag, and he also did it for [the bar scenes at] the Boot of Jemiah, so we could keep the extras hyped and alive and feeling like they were in a bar atmosphere.
“Being that these were night shoots, it helped to keep people awake as well,” he wrote. “Simon took requests for the credit scene, but for the Boot of Jemiah, he asked me to put together an awesome playlist of high energy party tunes. So I did, featuring some of my favorite tunes. . .I thought I’d share it with you in case you wanted to make your own Boot of Jemiah Playlist – or, as known from now on, Awesome Mix Volume Zero.”
Awesome Mix Vol. 1 contained songs from decades past by the Jackson 5, David Bowie, Raspberries and more, because, in the film, they existed on a tape that belonged to lead character Peter “Star-Lord” Quill’s mother, who died in 1988. Earlier this year, Gunn told Rolling Stone he also had hoped to make a soundtrack that could live outside of the movie. “I’ve spent my whole life compulsively collecting music and making all sorts of mixes for my siblings and friends and girlfriends,” the director said. “I feel like this soundtrack was an opportunity to make a mix CD for the whole world.”
The album became such a hit that it was given a vinyl release in September. Next week, the soundtrack will become available in the format used in the movie – cassette – as a special release for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event, set for November 28th. Until then, we have Volume Zero.
