Emmys 2014: ‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Veep’ Nominated
Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Veep are among the series that are nominated in multiple major categories, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series, for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards. Orange Is the New Black and True Detective also received multiple nominations, and the lead actors of the latter show – Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey – are both up against one another in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. The award ceremony will be broadcast on NBC on August 25th at 8 p.m. EST.
The Mindy Project’s Mindy Kaling, who received no nominations, and NBC’s Zelig-like host Carson Daly, whose show The Voice is up for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program, announced the nominations in Los Angeles this morning. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Chairman and CEO Bruce Rosenblum introduced the presentation by declaring that “quality television is now platform-agnostic,” which is reflected in the number of Netflix titles, including House of Cards and Derek, that are up for trophies this year.
Regardless, traditional television series still dominated the nominations overall. Modern Family is up for its fifth consecutive Outstanding Comedy Series nod, and Big Bang Theory actor Jim Parsons has gotten a sixth Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nomination, an award he’s won three times so far. This year, Parsons is also nominated for his role in the HBO movie The Normal Heart.
Notably absent from the major nominations was Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which won Golden Globes in the best comedy category and best actor in a comedy for its lead, Andy Samberg. Only Andre Braugher scored a nomination, for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Other notable omissions include The Walking Dead, which was recognized only for special and visual effects and for sound editing, and The Blacklist and its star James Spader, neither of which garnered any nominations.
