‘Game of Thrones’ Creators: More Death is ‘Inevitable’
With the fourth season of Game of Thrones finally underway, it’s time to start preparing for the worst: Death, death and more death.
The 10 Most Dramatic ‘Game of Thrones’ Deaths
Speaking to New York Daily News, the series’ creators and stars warned fans that the new season may make the “Red Wedding” look like sunny beachside nuptials. “Of course people die,” Lena Headey, who plays Queen Regent Cersei, told the paper of this upcoming season. “I can’t say any more than that because I would literally lose my job.” Headey added that she hasn’t read George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series for fear of finding out if, or when, she meets her demise, saying: “I’m not looking forward when it’s my turn for unemployment.”
Without getting too specific, GoT creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss teased some of what’s to come this year, including Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) army and dragons laying waste to several cities and a massive battle that finds Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and members of Night’s Watch going head-to-head with the dreaded Wildlings. Amidst all that destruction, a few beloved characters are sure to lose their lives.
Still, Weiss and Benioff had somewhat comforting words to offer. “If a character death feels random…the audience often feels cheated. But the brilliance of George’s novels is that the deaths all seem inevitable after the fact. When you go back to reread the Red Wedding chapter, you can’t believe you missed all the clues. More importantly, the fear of getting our hearts broken is part of the deal, whether in real life or fiction.”
