Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’ Dress Fetches $67K at Auction
The famous polka dot dress worn by the late Amy Winehouse on the cover of her now classic Back to Black album pulled in over £43,200 ($67,120) Tuesday at Kerry Taylor Auctions in London, where it was up for bidding alongside famous garments from Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn. The chiffon frock, designed in 2006 by Thai designer Disaya, was sold to Foundation Museo de la Moda in Chile.
Winehouse’s father, who attended the auction, told the Washington Post that he felt bittersweet about the dress’s symbolism. Worn at the height of the singer’s critical and commercial success, it is also a reminder of her wraith-like figure at the time. “As you can see, she was very thin at that point,” he says of the five-year old Back to Black photo session. “When you project forward to the Tony Bennett video, you can see how much better she was.”
After the sale, he said the Winehouse family was “over the moon” over the auction’s success, the proceeds of which will benefit The Amy Winehouse Foundation, the youth-oriented charity he helped set up in his daughter’s name.
Winehouse’s posthumous album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, hits stores December 6th. Included is her previously unreleased cover of Ruby and the Romantics’ “Our Day Will Come,” recorded in 2002.
