The Democrat Disenfranchisement Act of 2006
These really are dark days.
The GOP controlled house has just passed a law mandating that all voters show a photo ID at the polls starting in 2008. It sounds almost reasonable until you realize that there are some 5 to 7 percent of our countrymen who don’t have a photo ID. These tend to be the urban poor, the elderly and the most marginal of our citizenry.
Targeting these voters for exclusion is a transparent attempt by the GOP to suppress likely Democratic supporters. It’s also likely unconstitutional. In courts from Georgia to Missouri, federal judges have ruled these ID provisions are an unjustifiable barrier to the franchise.
Said Steney Hoyer, the Dem’s #2 man: “This bill is tantamount to a 21st-century poll tax. It will disenfranchise large numbers of legal voters.”
