L.A. Radio Station Launches ‘Music Mine’ iPad App for Music Discovery
Popular Los Angeles public radio station KCRW 89.9FM, noted for its support of emerging sounds and breaking artists, has launched free iPad app Music Mine, meant to help open-minded listeners discover new music.
Rather than simply stream live broadcasts alone, the application instead prominently highlights a curated selection of musicians and tunes chosen by the outlet’s DJs, alongside accompanying photos, videos, biographies, blog posts and audio snippets. While 24-hour online programming is available, including on-air shows, the program primarily focuses on actual performers and tracks themselves, aggregating associated online content for convenient browsing.
Using a streamlined, touch-sensing interface built from a stylishly-appointed mélange of text links and visual carousels, it allows owners to tap to learn more about upcoming acts and songs which may tickle their fancy. Designed in partnership with The Echo Nest, a software platform that culls online music news and multimedia material into a single, easily-browsed location, fans of indie or eclectic selections are likeliest to appreciate the duet.
