Netflix Streaming Video Hits Nintendo 3DS Game System
Netflix online video streaming is now available via the Nintendo 3DS portable handheld video game system.
Available as a free download from the Nintendo eShop, the application allows instant streaming of TV shows and movies on the device’s top screen. While films and television episodes are presently viewable in 2D only, a selection of 3D movies (presumably limited) which can be watched without special glasses will be available “soon.”
As revealed earlier this week, use of the service will require a $7.99 monthly Netflix subscription plan, and high-speed broadband Internet connection, such as those offered by WiFi hotspots.
Despite its underperforming sales, the Nintendo 3DS remains one of the most widely-distributed devices capable of displaying 3D content. Given the high cost of most 3D TVs and need for special stereoscopic glasses many employ, streaming online 3D video may ultimately prove a killer app for the console if Netflix can deliver a broad and high-quality enough film selection.
