Grouplove play ‘Colours,’ Talk Friendship at Lollapalooza
In performing their song “Colours” for Rolling Stone at Lollapalooza, Grouplove give their listeners a bit of advice involving trials and transformations. The band reminds us, repeatedly, that there’s “no need to be sad,” and, indeed, as the song journeys through colors, the band achieves a sort of joyous reverie that leads by example. Of course, Grouplove are no strangers to journeys and joyous reveries, having formed while its members were all, individually, stuck on the Greek island of Crete in 2009. When they finally got off the island, they regrouped in the city of Los Angeles, committing to the band and each other while recording what would become their debut EP in member Ryan Rabin’s home studio.
In the exclusive interview that follows, Grouplove acknowledge that it’s been one heck of a fast-moving, freewheeling adventure ever since the memb ers all relocated to Los Angeles in 2010 to make the band their number-one priority. In fact, in trying to explain just how, exactly, to categorize the widely influenced ‘Grouplove sound,’ frontwoman Hannah Hooper simply classifies it as a “friendship.” Whereas an answer like that might sound unnecessarily artsy coming from an ex-Brooklynite, the truth is, Grouplove get a pass. They’re certainly proving worthy of their name.
