Kanye West and Maroon 5 to Perform at Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show
His first womenswear collection may have bombed with critics in Paris, but Kanye West is back in the States and on the rebound. Monday, he made a cameo at Occupy Wall Street (wearing Givenchy, media watchers were quick to point out); yesterday, Victoria’s Secret revealed he will play this year’s annual catwalk spectacle alongside Maroon 5. The show will air on CBS on November 29th.
Since 2001, Victoria’s Secret have turned their televised runway show into something like a half-time spectacle by incorporating live performers. With a mass audience in mind, the performers usually range from the chart-topping pop acts du jour to evergreen acts – in past years, everyone from Destiny’s Child to Sting to Justin Timberlake to a reunited Spice Girls have played the VS stage. Last year, a special promo video for Katy Perry’s “Firework,” featuring that season’s Angels, foreshadowed Perry’s own performance at the event.
Both West and Maroon 5 seem well-suited for this performance. M5 frontman Adam Levine has found a comfortable home on primetime television with his role as a coach on NBC’s The Voice; his band’s return to the charts with their third album, Hands All Over, garnered several hits, including the recent Christina Aguilera-fueled Number One, “Moves Like Jagger.” Meanwhile, West is rumored to be dating supermodel Chanel Iman, who walked in his Paris show and is an occasional Victoria’s Secret Angel herself.
