Andrew Garfield Dares to Diss Beyonce, Spoofs Timberlake on ‘SNL’
Andrew Garfield‘s debut hosting Saturday Night Live was full of the expected references to his freshly-opened blockbuster, The Amazing Spiderman 2, including a few cameos from costar Emma Stone. But one of the funniest sketches played off the affable Brit’s unlikely action-hero status with a trailer for “The Beygency,” a thriller where Garfield finds himself on the run from shadowy forces after admitting that he doesn’t especially like Beyonce’s song “Drunk in Love.” “He turned against his country, and its Queen,” the voiceover intones. 24‘s Kiefer Sutherland puts in a cameo as another man who “made a mistake.” (He pulls down his short collar to reveal a “Rihanna #1” tattoo.)
How Spider-Man Conquered the World
The Spidey joke was more direct in a scene where Garfield and Stone attempt to film a critical romantic scene for the movie, but are forced to admit that they don’t know how normal people kiss. After the pair runs through several bizarre approximations of human kissing, musical guest Coldplay’s Chris Martin arrives to teach his countryman a tender lesson.
“Celebrity Family Feud” gave Garfield an opportunity to seduce the audience with his impression of “America’s Prom King” Justin Timberlake. The sketch also featured Kate McKinnon as Shakira, Aidy Bryant as Adele, Kyle Mooney as Skrillex and Nasim Pedrad as Bruno Mars. (“If you like Michael Jackson but always wished he was a little smaller, you’re gonna love this guy,” declares Kenan Thompson as host Steve Harvey.) Jay Pharoah also put in a nice touch as an overly-ingratiating Drake, who says that when he gets bored, “I think about how blessed I am to have fans worldwide.” “How come everything you say sounds like you accepting an award?” Harvey responds.
Garfield didn’t appear in the cold open, which took aim at Clippers owner Donald Sterling (played by Bobby Moynihan), imagining his futile attempts to salvage his image after last weekend’s racist audiotape scandal. “My reputation has gotten a real black eye, which we all know is the worst kind of eye,” he says, before pronouncing Magic Johnson as “clearly one of the good ones.” He also brings out America’s unofficial ambassador to North Korea, Dennis Rodman, who praises Sterling while declaring his own credentials: “I am above all a good judge of character.”
Saturday Night Live returns next week with host Charlize Theron and musical guests the Black Keys.
