Lena Dunham Goofs on Nudity, Feminism in ‘SNL’ Promos
Nudity, feminism, carefully composed visuals: No, it isn’t an episode of HBO’s Girls – it’s an SNL promo compilation featuring Girls star-creator Lena Dunham, who hosts the sketch comedy series this Saturday, March 8th (alongside musical guest the National). In the series of promos, Dunham goofs around with castmember Kate McKinnon, throwing out a few references to the acclaimed HBO dramedy along the way.
The 50 Funniest People Now: Lena Dunham
While Dunham is known for frequently baring it all on Girls, it’s McKinnon who goes topless in this SNL gag. “Lena, I thought we said on the phone that we would both wear the same outfit?”, McKinnon angrily asks, as the camera pans out to reveal her blurred chest. Dunham apologizes for the mistake, but McKinnon is nonetheless left with “tons of errands to run,” including a “speaking engagement at a high school.”
In another wacky clip, McKinnon asks her buddy “Lenes” if they are, truly, “two young feminists in the house.” When Dunham responds with an enthuastic “I think we are,” they celebrate with kooky dancing as the words “TWO YOUNG FEMINISTS” dance on the screen.
Elsewhere, the duo riff on a fictional Girls theme park, profuse sweating and Dunham’s artistic promo demands (“Try a take where you bring up the vulnerability,” she asks McKinnon, while also referring to the latter as “slut-witch”).
But the funniest bit involves McKinnon campaigning for a very lengthy guest role on Girls: “I would love to be on the show one day,” she says. “I don’t even have to have a big part – I could just be a character who moves in with Hannah and follows her around and does everything with her. . . What if I was just a person who killed Hannah and then lived as her?”
