Seth Rogen, Jimmy Kimmel Spoof ‘True Detective’
Jimmy Kimmel scored a major coup on Monday when he “previewed” the second season of True Detective to kick off Jimmy Kimmel Live!‘s week-long run in Austin for the South by Southwest festival.
5 things we learned from True Detective
While the stars of the show’s first season, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, won’t be returning, we now know way more about season two’s new cast and crime than creator Nic Pizzolatto’s let on: It’ll involve a whole lot of Lone Star beer, a desecration of Daniel Johnston’s famed frog mural in Austin and duets of classic 80s pop songs courtesy of Kimmel and his partner, Seth Rogen.
The clip sends up the best aspects of the HBO show, with Kimmel spoofing the straight-shooting Marty Hart (Harrelson) and Rogen parodying the long-winded, nihilistic Rustin Cohle (McConaughey), whose witnessed some terrible things during his deep undercover days. “You ever seen a baby kill his own mama with a breakfast taco?!” he asks Michael Potts, who pops up to reprise his role as Detective Maynard Gilbough.
Rogen rambles about the various drugs he’s imbibed (including freebasing gluten) and how “any man who sets his moral compass to true North will end up going South – by Southwest.” Later in the car, Rogen goes on and on about time being a flat circle before he ends up logically quoting the lyrics to Cher‘s “If I Could Turn Back Time.” “Are you quoting Cher?” Kimmel asks. “Well it’s Diane Warren, she wrote the song,” Rogen corrects him. “Technically I’m quoting Diane Warren.” The two then proceed to cut the tension by busting out an adorable a cappella cover of Cyndi Lauper‘s “Time After Time.”
While a thrilling fight separates the two true detectives for 12 years, Kimmel and Rogen rekindle their relationship at the end, (almost) doing what you’d wished the real Cohle and Hart would have done all season. Just watch.
