‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ Interviews SXSW Hipsters About Fake Bands
For the latest (and most hilarious) edition of “Lie Witness News,” Jimmy Kimmel sent his late night crew to the king of hipster meccas: the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. Armed with a camera and a list of amazing fake band names, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! team approached over-eager music fans to gather opinions on some of the festival’s fictional break-out bands.
Here’s Jimmy Kimmel: On the Cover of Rolling Stone
“Over 2,000 bands are playing SXSW this year – which I think is all of them,” Kimmel notes in the lead-in. And that list includes newcomers “Contact Dermatitis” (who are “poised to spread like a rash across the nation”) and Neil Patrick Harassment – who, as one attendee notes, make “very entertaining” music.
The longer the segment rolls on, the sadder and more hilarious the interviews become, with fans cranking up their fake enthusiasm for these very clearly fake bands. One heavily tattooed girl notes her appreciation for “DJ Heavy Flow” (though admits she’s “only heard a couple songs” from The Toxic Shock Experience), while another particularly critical gentleman says he doesn’t care too much for the country-rap stylings of Willie Nelson Mandela: “I heard it, but I’m not really into it.”
When approached for her opinion about “Tanya and the Hardings” (an especially “hard-hitting” outfit that sounds like a legitimate riot grrrl band), one wide-eyed girl darts her eyes for a moment, as if wrestling with her own conscience, and ultimately proceeds to lie about their gender-uniting strengths: “A lot of men have been talking about them, saying that they’re really impressed by them.” (She’s only “heard snippets of it,” though – that’s the lying hipster mantra.)
Let this video be a warning: Next time a stranger asks you if you prefer Vegan Bikini over DJ Metamucil, just be honest – or you’ll end up looking foolish on national television.
