Emily’s Army Explore Both Sides of a Breakup in ‘Ammonia and Bleach’
When Emily’s Army first arrived in 2011, the teen punks were just old enough to have a taste for the agony and ecstasy of relationships. A few years older and wiser, the Oakland trio are returning with a new EP titled Swim this week, which features a breakup tune called “Ammonia and Bleach.” Last week they previewed the song, and today we’re premiering its video, which features a young couple fighting in a retro diner. At first, the employees laugh at their argument, then the other customers start to stare and finally, the couple break a mug — and walk out the door holding hands. The clip was directed by Brecht Vanthof and Marki Becker.

“More often then not, you hear songs about how one side of a relationship is in the wrong,” drummer Joey Armstrong, the son of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, tells Rolling Stone. “We wanted to write a song about how both sides are great on their own, but toxic together. Incorporating both the song and the short film into the final product, this music video tells a more holistic version of the story.”
The four-song Swim EP will be released tomorrow on Rise Records and can be pre-ordered here.
