Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds Recruit Roller Derby Girls for Campy Video
Noel Gallagher‘s High Flying Birds have shared a glittery, grindhouse-tinted video for “Do the Damage,” a B-side from their recently announced new LP, Chasing Yesterday. The Mike Bruce-directed clip focuses on two rival roller derby teams – the pink-wearing Glam Dolls and their black-donning nemeses the Destroyers – and culminates with a deceitful love triangle. The clip is available on DIY.
“Do the Damage,” a heavy riff-rocker colored by spacey sax, won’t make the final track list for the band’s second album, which comes out March 2nd via Sour Mash. But Gallagher says the track was a late-round contender. “It might be the 23rd best song I ever wrote,” the former Oasis member told NME. “It was – for about a year – going to be the opening track on the album until the 22nd best song I ever wrote appeared.”
In October, High Flying Birds announced the album – a follow-up to their self-titled 2011 debut – and released its slow-burning lead single, “In the Heat of the Moment” (which is not a cover of the Asia song with a similar title). According to a press release, that track was inspired by a documentary in which an astronaut likened his first space flight to “touching the face of God.”
The album will reportedly veer from classic rock to “space jazz” and close with a track called “Ballad of the Might I” featuring a Johnny Marr cameo. (Interestingly, the album also features a tune called “While the Song Remains the Same,” which nearly shares a title with the Led Zeppelin epic.)
