See Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett’s Chemistry at Work in the Duo’s New Video
Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett might seem like an unlikely pair, but the video for their version of the jazz standard, “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” proves the diva and the crooner exude a unique, adorable brand of musical chemistry.
Comprising footage from the pair’s recording sessions, Gaga struts her stuff in a bevy of various outfits and hairstyles, belting out her verses, before Bennett swings through, sounding dapper as ever. The two join forces for the track’s final chorus for a peculiar, yet potent blend of styles that transcends generations and genres.
Bennett and Gaga’s duets album, Cheek to Cheek, will see release on deluxe and standard editions on September 23rd. The pair’s relationship blossomed after Bennett heard Gaga sing Nat King Cole’s “Orange Colored Sky” in 2011 and asked her to sing alongside him on a recording of “Lady is a Tramp,” which ended up on his Duets II album. Since then, Gaga and Bennett have recorded a number of tracks from the “great American songbook,” including tunes written or co-written by Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
Accompanying Cheek to Cheek will be two TV specials: Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek Live!, a concert special recorded at the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center that will air October 24th at 9 p.m. on PBS; and Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek To Cheek, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the album, which airs on HSN on September 13th.
In a recent chat with Rolling Stone, Bennett explained what drew him to Gaga, and why their work together truly shines: “She phrases like I phrase. She’s a wonderful singer. Everybody knows and loves her very much. I think when they hear this album that we’re doing, they’re going to say, ‘We had no idea that she sings that well.'”
