See Dustin Lynch’s Steamy ‘Mind Reader’ Video
It can be a risky proposition to leave your fate in the hands of another, but Dustin Lynch is plenty comfortable with handing over control to a mysterious woman and her set of Tarot cards in his new video for “Mind Reader,” which debuted Friday. The third single from his sophomore album Where It’s At, the Rhett Akins and Ben Hayslip-written track is another example of the moody, R&B tinged-country Lynch has been cultivating of late — lacing vamps ripped from progressive rock into his native Tennessee twang.
Directed by Mason Dixon — who, unsurprisingly, was born south of the Mason Dixon line — the video follows Lynch and a love interest as they cavort through the Nashville night, all to the backdrop of a Tarot reading that might be predicting their future. Unless, of course, she’s the one actually reading minds instead of the cards.
Currently on tour with Luke Bryan, Lynch is enjoying playing songs like “Mind Reader” and the equally aggressive “Hell of a Night,” which are inspired as much by his love for country legends like George Strait as his admitted weakness for The 1975, Mutemath and the Neighbourhood — though don’t expect him to ditch his signature cowboy hat for Matt Healy’s pompadour-undercut-manbun combo anytime soon.
Lynch hopes that being inclusive of all genres, rather than strictly purist, will help ensure country keeps plunging forward in popularity. “We’re in a spot in country much where we can go out and grab new fans,” he told Rolling Stone Country. “With Taylor Swift and Florida Georgia Line introducing people to country music — maybe those people will come to a country festival and have the time of their life. We can grab people that are on the fence, dipping a toe into the water. We can bring them all the way in.”
