See Brandy Clark Play Puppet Master in ‘Girl Next Door’ Video
In the just-released video for her current single “Girl Next Door,” Brandy Clark plays puppet master, bringing the song’s snarky lyrics to life with her performance alongside the clip’s depiction of a Stepford wife escaping domesticity.
“This song is about someone wanting you for one thing, and then wishing you were completely different,” says Clark, who wrote “Girl Next Door” with Jessie Jo Dillon and Shane McAnally. Production of the clip was helmed by Tracie Goudie and Shane Tarleton.
In spite of the subservient role the shackled housewife plays in the video, when it comes to writing and performing, Clark acknowledges that women do have an advantage in country music.
“Women can paint with a few more colors in this business,” she tells Rolling Stone Country. “A guy could never sing a song like ‘Stripes’ [from her debut 12 Stories]. “A guy could never even joke about killing his wife! Miranda [Lambert] can sing about getting pissed off and blowing things up, but a guy could never do that.”
The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, whose acclaimed 12 Stories was released in 2013, will release her sophomore album later this summer. Currently she is on the road with Jennifer Nettles as part of CMT’s Next Women of Country tour.
