The R&B/pop singer admitted to a Los Angeles judge on Friday that he had gotten into a fight with a 20-year-old man in Washington, D.C. last year. While the criminal case against Brown is still ongoing, the fight was enough to violate Brown’s probation stemming from his 2009 beating of then-girlfriend Rihanna.
Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin sentenced the singer to 365 days in jail, but gave him credit for 234 days he has already served. Brown has been imprisoned since mid-March when he was arrested after leaving a court-ordered rehab stint.
According to TMZ, Brown could have legally received up to four years in jail, but the judge was swayed by a recent court report claiming Brown had bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Brown was also ordered to attend therapy twice a week and submit to random drug testing three times a week.
Last month, Brown’s bodyguard Christopher Hollosy was convicted of assault after he allegedly punched 20-year-old Parker Adams outside a Washington, D.C. hotel last October. Hollosy told police at the time that he struck Adams when he tried to board Brown’s tour bus. Brown told authorities he was on his tour bus at the time of the alleged attack. Adams had a different story at trial, claiming he had asked for a photo with the pop star, who was talking to two women at the time. Adams has filed a $3 million civil suit against Brown and Hollosy, looking to get $1.5 million from each defendant for medical bills.
The pop star checked himself into a rehab facility following his D.C. arrest, but was kicked out for violating its rules. He was later jailed and has been in custody ever since. Brown’s assault trial has been delayed until at least June, reports AP, after prosecutors told the presiding judge that they wouldn’t grant Hollosy immunity to testify at the singer’s trial.
