Watch Wynonna and the Big Noise’s Humid ‘Cool Ya’
Wynonna and the Big Noise performed a trio of songs from the band’s self-titled debut LP for the CBS This Morning Saturday Sessions one week after the new album’s February 12th release. Backed by the four-piece band that includes her drummer-husband Cactus Moser (who also produced the record), Judd tore through the slinky blues of the romantic “You Are So Beautiful” and offered a web-exclusive rendition of the gutsy “You Make My Heart Beat Too Fast,” which also features harmonies from Moser.
Donning shades for her performance of the LP’s red-hot opener “Cool Ya,” penned by Lisa Carver and Andrew Ripp, Judd is part snake charmer and part temptress, on a track with a Middle Eastern vibe that demonstrates just how much she’s relishing her new role as front woman of this bluesy, roots-influenced band.
The new album, which debuted in the Top Fifteen on the country chart and is also rapidly climbing the Americana chart, has broadened the singer’s scope and reached a whole new segment of the music-consuming public, many of whom she acknowledges were not even born when she and her mother Naomi were harmonizing of such massive country hits as “Why Not Me,” “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days)” and “Love Can Build a Bridge.” But whatever trepidation may surface from longtime fans, it’s nothing compared to her own.
“I read a book called Who Moved My Cheese?” she tells Rolling Stone Country. “It’s about change; some people don’t like it, some people won’t do it, some people embrace it and some people thrive on it. I’m all of the above. I’m seeing myself in this book and I’m seeing it happen with the fans. Some are saying, ‘I embrace this love affair that you’re having; good for you.’ I’m sure some are irritated by the love story because it’s a deep and wide story. Then there are some who are saying, ‘More Wynonna and less of the Big Noise.’ It’s really hard for them to let go of the past and see me with a band. Because, I am telling you, it’s not Wynonna, Inc. over here and the Big Noise over there.”
Wynonna and the Big Noise will be on the West Coast this week, for a series of California shows beginning Wednesday, February 24th, in Palm Desert. See more of the band’s tour dates here.
