Hear Radiohead’s Phil Selway Sing the Liberating ‘It Will End in Tears’
Philip Selway shows his tender side on the piano ballad “It Will End in Tears,” a track off his upcoming solo record, Weatherhouse, which is due out October 7th. Previously, the Radiohead drummer shared a more brooding offering, the chilly “Coming Up for Air” – for which he made a surrealistic video – and though the new song’s lyrics are still dark (“It will end in tears, and I won’t be sorry,” goes the refrain) the music itself is surprisingly straightforward and light.
Selway crafted the record, whose title is name-checked in “It Will End in Tears” (“We could spend a lifetime in a weatherhouse”), with musicians Adem Ilhan and Quinta. The group recorded the LP in Radiohead‘s Oxfordshire studio. “I love records that you can almost live in, where the songs become talismans that you take to heart,” Selway said in a statement. “That’s what I was trying to create in Weatherhouse.”
Even though Selway is promoting the new record, he and his Radiohead bandmates have said that they intend to get back together in the studio this month. “We’re going to start up in September, playing, rehearsing and recording and see how it’s sounding,” guitarist Jonny Greenwood told the BBC in July.
But even with that said, Greenwood, too, has other plans scheduled for later this month. On the 19th and 20th, he will be performing his score for the 2007 movie There Will Be Blood, alongside the Wordless Music Orchestra in New York City. He’s also been busy writing music for another Paul Thomas Anderson film, an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel Inherent Vice, which will premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 4th and get a more widespread theatrical release on December 12th.
