The Avalanches Return, Announce Festival Shows
Reclusive electronic group the Avalanches have announced three festival performances – their first traditional live dates since 2007, not including a 2011 DJ set. The Australian act will perform at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound (June 3rd, along with the June 5th closing party at the sala Apolo), London’s Field Day (June 12th) and Australia’s Splendour in the Grass (July 22nd-24th), Pitchfork reports.
Meanwhile, fans still await concrete information about the group’s follow-up to 2000 debut LP, Since I Left You, the dance-pop song cycle that earned widespread acclaim for its innovative production and sample-heavy sound. Founding member Darren Seltmann recently left the lineup, with his wife, singer-songwriter Sally Seltmann, breaking the news to Melbourne’s Herald Sun in February 2014.
Sporadic details about the album have trickled out in recent years. In 2014, rapper Danny Brown raved to Triple J about an Avalanches collaboration, saying, “I did one song with them a while ago and it was cool. They felt like it was OK, and I felt like it was OK. But then we actually got in the studio and made a record and I swear the record we made is incredible. ‘Frank Sinatra’ was the first one we did. That was cool but the one we did after that … I swear, if we put that out, it’ll change the world. I heard it that first night and that was the only time I heard it. I wanna hear it again!” The song has yet to be released.
In 2011, the group – in a since-deleted tweet – referenced “new song ‘the stepkids’ w/ Jennifer RTX” (assumedly Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux and RTX) and posted some lyrics.
Speculation has increased with the updating of their website, though no concrete info on a new album has been released.
