Dierks Bentley, Secret Sisters Salute Jack Clement — Song Premiere
As a solo artist, Cowboy Jack Clement didn’t record many albums. The man could sing, play guitar and write hit songs, but he preferred to do most of his work behind the soundboard, where he recorded classics for a far-flung group of country crooners and rootsy rockers, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Charley Pride, Townes Van Zandt, Waylon Jennings, U2, Elvis Presley, and dozens of others. It’s no surprise that he picked up an impressive group of friends along the way — and even less of a surprise that many of those friends chose to appear on Clement’s third (and final) album, For Once and For All.
Cowboy Jack Clement’s Final Album Features Dan Auerbach, John Prine
Dierks Bentley and the Secret Sisters lend their voices to “Got Leaving on Her Mind,” one of the album’s twangy, tag-teamed highlights. Recorded months before Clement’s death in August 2013, the song struts its stuff with all the confidence of a fed-up lover who’s just left the nest and hit the highway, thanks to strong performances by a trio of singers who grew up listening to the songs Clement helped create. Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings and the Black Keys‘ Dan Auerbach make cameos on a pair of additional tunes, as do longtime friends like Bobby Bare (who recorded his own version of “Got Leaving on Her Mind” in the mid-Sixties), John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Leon Russell, Vince Gill, Duane Eddy and Marty Stuart.
For Once and For All hits stores on July 15th, but early birds can dig into “Got Leaving on Her Mind” below.
