Watch the ‘Better Call Saul’ Music Video That Reveals Potential Plot Lines
Just a year after Breaking Bad and its antihero Walter White bid farewell to television, we now finally have our first real glimpse at the spinoff series Better Call Saul, which stars Bob Odenkirk reprising his role of scummy lawyer Saul Goodman. At the conclusion of AMC’s Breaking Bad marathon on Sunday night, the network unveiled some more teasers for the highly anticipated show in the form of a music video for the appropriately titled “Better Call Saul,” performed by country artist Junior Brown.
In the video, which is reminiscent of the musical opening from the Breaking Bad Season Two episode “Negro y Azul,” Brown’s lyrics suggest possible plot lines from the upcoming series, with crimes ranging from drunk-driving to shoplifting to a creepy case of child abduction. “Your husband disappeared in the most convenient way / Now your troubles are gone, the insurance will surely pay / You get to the bank but the cops say ‘Whoa!’ / Who you gonna dial when they lock you down low?,” Brown sings. “Saul, Saul, you better call Saul / He’ll fight for your rights, when your back’s to the wall / He’ll stick it to the man, justice for all.”
We only see snippets of footage from the actual show, like Goodman practicing his craft in the courtroom, or the lawyer standing in front of a billboard advertising the services of James McGill (which we’ve learned is Goodman’s real name), but the lyrics offer enough insight into Better Call Saul to get fans excited about the show’s possibilities.
Breaking Bad mastermind Vince Gilligan and writer Peter Gould created the spinoff series, with the pair serving as co-showrunners. They also penned the lyrics for this “Better Call Saul” song along with Breaking Bad composer Dave Porter. Bad writing staff vets Thomas Schnauz and Gennifer Hutchison are also on board for the spinoff, as is actor Jonathan Banks, who portrayed fan favorite hitman Mike Ehrmantraut. On Better Call Saul, we see Ehrmantraut when he was still a private detective.
“We like jumping around in time,” Gilligan previously said about the show. “I would definitely point you in the direction of ‘anything that was possible storytelling-wise on Breaking Bad is possible on Better Call Saul.” Gilligan also revealed that Better Call Saul is a “period piece” that takes place in 2002, giving it a decent gap between the pilot and Walter White’s odyssey.
Better Call Saul heads to AMC in February 2015. Despite not even airing yet, the show has already been renewed for a second season.
