Courtney Love Revisits ‘Pacific Coast Highway’ Acoustically – Premiere
In a moment of reflection, Courtney Love has stripped the song “Pacific Coast Highway” down to its bare essentials – an acoustic guitar and Love. Although the original track, which she co-wrote with Smashing Pumpkins‘ Billy Corgan for Hole‘s 2010 album Nobody’s Daughter, features piano and frenetic electric guitar, the acoustic version plays up the vulnerability in previously yowled lyrics about “miles and miles of regrets.” But in Love’s words at the beginning of the video, “We’re going through our catalog and trying to figure out songs that I can learn so when I go to parties I can say, ‘And that song’s about you; I just wrote it about a week ago.'”
As it happens, Love has been writing a lot more frequently lately. Earlier this month, she released a double A-side single containing two new songs, “You Know My Name” and “Wedding Day.”
She also recently reunited – offstage – with the Hole lineup who worked together on their 1998 album Celebrity Skin. But while she’d initially teased that “2014 is going to be an interesting year,” she has since said that any public reunions would likely take place sometime in 2015.
In a recent interview with Pitchfork, she said that there were “caveats” to playing together, including figuring out how to intermingle sober members with those who still drink and figuring out a way to include her current guitarist, Micko Larkin, in the mix. Additionally, the group would need to want to work on new music. “If we can get two killer songs together and then look at an album. . . I can’t live on the oldies circuit,” she said.
