Kevin Spacey Eclipses GOP Debate, Announces ‘House of Cards’ Premiere
Frank Underwood weaseled his way into the Republican presidential debate Tuesday to promote his own agenda for America and announce that Season Four of House of Cards would premiere March 4th on Netflix.
The 30-second spot was a sharp parody of treacly political ads, showing clips of construction workers building a house, war planes launching off a battle ship at sunset and children frolicking through a field with American flags flapping behind them. On top of all of it, a narrator delivered quaint platitudes about “a new day in America” and “one man who refuses to settle,” who “puts people before politics.”
In the ad’s closing moments, the country’s self-proclaimed savior, Kevin Spacey as Underwood, appeared and promised with a cheshire grin, “America, I’m only getting started.”
House of Cards has also launched a faux-campaign site for Underwood’s bid for a second presidential term, complete with a media kit that includes a decal cheekily proclaiming, “FU 2016.”
While Spacey earned a Golden Globe last year for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Drama, both he and House of Cards were passed over for nominations this year. Robin Wright, however, will vie again for Best Performance by an Actress for her turn as Claire Underwood; Wright won the award in 2014 and was nominated in 2015 as well.
