NBC Places Pilot Order for ‘Cruel Intentions’ Sequel Series
NBC has ordered a pilot for a sequel series to the beloved Nineties teen romance, Cruel Intentions, Variety reports.
Roger Kumble, who wrote and directed the 1999 movie, is attached to helm the pilot, which was co-written by Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross. NBC secured a script commitment for the show in October.
The Cruel Intentions pilot will center around Bash Casey, the teenage son of Reese Witherspoon‘s Annette Hargrove and Ryan Phillippe‘s Sebastian Valmont, ostensibly conceived before the latter’s untimely death. Bash discovers his late father’s infamous journal and enters a world of sex, drugs and corruption, while also grappling with his step-aunt, Kathryn Merteuil (originally, Sarah Michelle Gellar) as she tries to gain control of Valmont International. No casting decisions for the series have been announced yet.
The Cruel Intentions series came about after Kumble attended a performance of Ross and Rosin’s musical adaptation of the film, which ran in Los Angeles last spring (a selection of songs from the show are available on Ross’ SoundCloud).
Along with developing the Cruel Intentions show with Kumble, Ross and Rosin have continued to dabble in left-field musical adaptations under their Sucker Love Productions banner. Last August, they staged The Unauthorized O.C. Musical, and they’re currently working on a musical adaptation of NBC’s beloved series, Friday Night Lights. The performance will even feature Scott Porter — who played golden boy quarterback Jason Street — as Coach Taylor (originally portrayed by Kyle Chandler).
