See Dave Grohl, Miley Cyrus, 50 Cent and More Wistfully Sing Off ‘Chelsea Lately’
Chelsea Handler ended her long-running E! series Chelsea Lately with an epic finale, as a horde of A-list pals joined the comedian for a corny sing-along sign-off called “She Wants to Sing.” The “We Are the World” parody featured musicians like Dave Grohl, Avril Lavigne and Alanis Morissette emoting about Handler’s exit and her plans for a scandalous future. (There are a lot of sex and drugs jokes.)
Gwen Stefani kicks off the segment with a tender introduction, pronouncing Handler’s last name as “Hemmer” (presumably poking fun at her previous verbal slip-up at this week’s Emmy Awards, where she pronounced Stephen “Colbert” as “Cole-bore”). A disparate group of famous faces (Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Jennifer Aniston, Melissa McCarthy, Anna Faris and Handler’s, uh, snuggle-buddy 50 Cent) appears on set, but the vocal work is handled by a select group of belters.
“She’s off to Spain/ To find random guys to screw,” sings Gerard Butler of the departing host, in a hilarious power-ballad style. “She offended blacks, Asians and the Jews,” adds Alanis Morissette. The funniest bit comes courtesy of Sammy Hagar, who touches on the druggy viewership of Chelsea Lately: “When you were up at night, couldn’t sleep at all/ Her show was great to mix with ecstasy and alcohol.” Marlee Matlin did sign language for the lyrics from the stage.
Prior to that collaborative sign-off, 50 Cent performed “Watch Me” with G-Unit. The rapper also sat down for a chat with Handler and discussed their hook-up history and current love lives.
Elsewhere in the jam-packed episode, Miley Cyrus delivered a sultry and straight-faced version of Roy Orbison‘s anthem “It’s Over.” She even did her hair in a rockabilly pompadour for the event.
