Moby Directs Creepy Video for David Lynch’s ‘The Big Dream’
Whenever David Lynch finally decides to direct another feature film, he should hire Moby as a cinematographer. First, the electronic pioneer produced a “reversion” of Lynch’s blues-noir hallucination “The Big Dream” (as part of an exclusive remix EP for this year’s Record Store Day), staying true to Lynch’s creepy sonic vision. Now he’s gone one step further by directing the track’s nightmarish music video.

Both track and video feature the talents of vocalist (and occasional Moby collaborator) Mindy Jones. “This night, when we dream together,” she sings in a breathy haze over flickers of electric guitar, atmospheric synth pads and a lumbering drum beat. “We remember, when we dream together.” Jones delivers the words while starting seductively into the camera, as Moby surrounds her with flashing lights (reminiscent of Twin Peaks) and disturbing masked figures drify by in the background. (Dude seems like he’s spent a lot of time studying Lynch’s surreal craft.)
The multi-talented Lynch released his first solo LP, Crazy Clown Time, back in 2011, followed by 2013’s The Big Dream. The director-musician recently spoke to Rolling Stone about his classic rock-leaning musical tastes after the David Lynch Foundation honored producer Rick Rubin with a “Lifetime of Harmony Award.”
“I love the blues,” he said. “And I love rhythm and blues, and Elvis Presley taking off from those two things. And I like rockabilly, and I like the Beatles — my favorite Beatles song is ‘Across the Universe.’ I like Jimi Hendrix and I like Bob Dylan. ZZ Top is one of my all-time favorite bands. When I first heard them, I said, ‘These people have got the power. And the roots are there.’ But they just kick butt.”
