Kacey Musgraves and Katy Perry Harmonize on ‘Keep It to Yourself’
While it’s a little odd to see the bewitching Katy Perry as a backup singer, her low harmonies on Kacey Musgraves‘ “Keep It to Yourself” make for a captivating version of the hit song. The two performed together for CMT Crossroads earlier this summer, trading lines on each other’s tunes, but “Keep It to Yourself” didn’t make the televised broadcast.
What did make the cut for the show’s 50th episode were the country star’s sassy “Step Off” and Grammy-winning “Merry Go Round,” along with the pop star’s colossal hits, “Roar” and “Teenage Dream.” “Follow Your Arrow” was a particularly poignant performance, as Musgraves once offered that song to Perry, who kindly convinced her to record it herself. Perry also threw in a spellbinding cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” while Musgraves did Dolly Parton justice with “Here You Come Again.”
Musgraves’ final date as the opening act on Perry’s Prismatic World Tour is August 22nd in Minneapolis. The tourmates have spent some time on the road writing together, including a Wizard of Oz-inspired tune that may make a future Perry album.
“Writing with her was amazing,” Musgraves tells Rolling Stone. “She’s undeniably a huge pop star, but there’s incredible substance and wit there, too.”
Up next, the 25-year-old country singer will hit the road as a headliner on the Same Tour Different Trailer trek, which kicks off September 25th in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “Ride With Me” singers John and Jacob will open the shows.
