Drake Answers Awkward ‘YOLO,’ Dating Questions From Vanessa Bayer
Heads up, Drake fans: If you want to join the rap giant’s crew, you’ll need to bring more than potato chips to the table. “It takes more than, like, a bag of Ruffles and some dip to get into my life,” Drake tells SNL cast member Vanessa Bayer (playing media coach Janessa Slater) in the latest episode of her intentionally awkward interview web series, Sound Advice. Elsewhere, the rapper faces absurd questions about the origins of “YOLO,” the benefits of using a Jewish online dating site and the possibility of changing his stage name.
Drake: High Times at the YOLO Estate
After pointing out that Drake’s birth name, Aubrey Drake Graham, is a bit uptight, Bayer suggests he go with a moniker “that’s a little more hip-hop/rap. . . like Graham Cracka?” (It’s “probably a bad idea,” Drake responds.) Later on, the comic actress asks Drake if, in fact, he did bring his “whole team” with him to the top (as he suggests in his anthem “Started From the Bottom”) and makes an awkward attempt to define “YOLO.” (As Drake notes, the acronym doesn’t stand for “You Are Lying Always.”) The funniest bit is when Bayer ribs Drake and the entirety of modern hip-hop about the throwback mixtape format. “It’s 1994 calling,” she says, after answering a fake cell phone call (and then having a fake conversation). “They want their technology back.”
Bayer’s interview style has a surrealist touch, reminiscent of Zach Galifianakis on Between Two Ferns or Chris Farley on the recurring SNL bit The Chris Farley Show. Throughout, Drizzy maintains a hilariously dejected expression, showing off his underrated Degrassi acting chops.
Season Two of Sound Advice premieres today, June 11th, on AboveAverage.com, with episodes to be released each Wednesday. Other guests set to receive awful advice include Tegan & Sara, Haim, TV on the Radio and Sara Bareilles.
