See Chef Recreate, Eat ZZ Top’s ‘Tres Hombres’ Mexican Food Photo
Streaming technology may allow for “on-the-go” access and the convenience of having the history of recorded music at your fingertips, but the LP format offers many notable advantages – like glorious gatefold photos of Mexican food. Austin chef Thomas Micklethwait paid tribute to both vinyl and burritos by recreating – and then eating – the culinary spread from the inside cover of ZZ Top‘s 1973 LP, Tres Hombres, Dangerous Minds reports.
The nearly three-minute video opens by assuring viewers, “This is a true story,” before Micklethwait cranks ZZ Top‘s blues-rock anthem “La Grange” on his stereo, the same one featured in the Tres Hombres photo. After cooking the massive, delicious-looking meal – and even recreating the kitchenware and decorations from the now-closed Leo’s Mexican Restaurant in Houston – he throws on his sunglasses and digs in. (There isn’t a full time-lapse section to prove he ate the entire thing, but we’ll take his word for it.)
Besides earning a spot in the Internet Hall of Fame, Micklethwait also received a compliment from the most impressive possible source: ZZ Top singer-guitarist Billy Gibbons. “It’s crazy – absolutely nuts,” the musician told Texas Monthly. “I stand in awe of what he’s accomplished. I have to hand it to him, he recreated every last element that you see in the centerfold with exacting detail. It’s rather remarkable.”
The clip ends with two recommendations: to buy ZZ Top’s Tres Hombres and to eat loads of Mexican food.
