Watch Gregg Allman Scorch ‘Midnight Rider’ With Vince Gill, Zac Brown

Watch the Allman Brothers Band singer play one of his biggest hits in our video premiere from his forthcoming live CD/DVD

Just over three months after Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes announced that they would be leaving the Allman Brothers Band at the end of the year, Gregg Allman will be releasing a one-DVD, two-CD live set at the beginning of May. Recorded this past January at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman features the singer playing both Allman Brothers and solo material, backed by a band that includes both Hayes and Trucks, as well as Trucks’ wife, Susan Tedeschi, and Gregg’s son, Devon Allman.

As the title implies, this volume is filled with special guests, bringing together such artists as Dr. John, John Hiatt, Taj Mahal, Robert Randolph, Keb’ Mo’ and Jackson Browne, the main artist’s onetime roommate. Notably, it also includes a strong selection of country artists — everyone from Eric Church and Trace Adkins to Martina McBride and Brantley Gilbert.

In the clip above, which we’re premiering here today, watch Gregg play Allman Brothers classic “Midnight Rider” with Vince Gill and Zac Brown. Early in the track Gill’s voice might be in danger of getting lost somewhere between those of the other two, but he makes his presence known later on, when he concludes the song by playing the most technical guitar solo anyone wearing Lower East Side-style clear-framed glasses has perhaps ever played.

I really enjoyed singing this song with Vince and Zac,” Allman tells Rolling Stone. “They really added something special to it. Being out there with them felt great.” All My Friends will officially be released on May 6th on Rounder Records.
