Spoon Fork Over New Song ‘Rent I Pay’
Spoon have shared “Rent I Pay,” the first full track from their upcoming new album, They Want My Soul. The steady-thumping garage rock cut comes complete with an unofficial clip that puts a new spin on the lyric video trend, opening with the the song’s lyrics in a single block of text before cutting to trippy footage of the silhouette of — one would assume — frontman Britt Daniel bashing out the song.

They Want My Soul, which is set for release on August 5th, follows up Spoon’s 2010 effort Transference and marks the Texas band’s first LP for new label Loma Vista after a long stint with indie stalwart Merge. The band began working on the record last March after an extended hiatus, during which Daniel released a record with his supergroup Divine Fits, multi-instrumentalist Eric Harvey released a solo album, drummer Jim Eno focused on producing and bassist Rob Pope opened a bar.
For the first time, Spoon worked with outside producers while recording the album, starting the LP with Joe Chiccarelli (Morrissey, Alanis Morissette, the Strokes) and wrapping it up with Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Weezer,MGMT). The album also includes contributions from new member Alex Fischel, who played with Daniel in Divine Fits. Spoon previewed a handful of cuts from They Want My Soul, including a cover of Ann-Margret’s “I Just Don’t Understand,” during a recent interview with NPR Music.
The band began teasing They Want My Soul back in March, releasing a 30-second clip that featured a new song on an Oscilloscope. Before a secret show in Austin, Daniel told Rolling Stone that They Want My Soul was “warmer and more inclusive” than Transference, and that he began writing it immediately after his stint with the Divine Fits. “It helped me remember that this is what it’s like to write everything all at once,” he said.
Spoon will spend much of this summer on the road, playing a slew of festivals dates as well, including Forecastle Festival, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Budweiser Made in America and Austin City Limits Music Festival.
